Measure the complete clearance path

A flat plug can help when a desk, cabinet, nightstand, or shelf sits close to a wall, but the wall gap is only one part of the fit. Plan the full route from the receptacle to the furniture-mounted power unit before drilling or moving heavy furniture. The plug body, cord exit direction, mounting position, and nearby drawers all affect whether the finished layout remains usable.

Check the wall receptacle clearance

Move the furniture to its intended final position and note which way the cord will leave the plug. Allow room for the plug housing and a gradual cord turn. Do not plan to trap the cord between the furniture and wall. If the desk moves, reclines, folds, or adjusts in height, check the smallest and largest gaps throughout that movement.

Choose the mounting style before measuring

“Desk grommet” can describe several installation styles. Some outlets drop into a cutout, while others fasten to the surface, cabinet side, or underside.
