How to Read USB-C Charging Profiles on Desk Outlets

They are charging profiles a compatible source can offer, and the connected device uses a supported profile to request the power it needs.
Start with the power equation
Electrical power in watts is voltage multiplied by current:
Watts = Volts x Amps
Applying that equation to a common 20W USB-C label gives:

The 20W rating is the approximate maximum of the supported profiles. It is not 15W + 20W + 20W, and the source does not deliver every profile at the same time to one device.
The device selects a compatible profile
A USB-C power source and a compatible device communicate before using a higher supported voltage. The phone, tablet or accessory does not automatically receive 12V simply because 12V appears on the label. It requests a profile that both sides support. If the device, cable or charging implementation does not support the higher profile, charging can remain at a lower level.
The USB-IF overview of USB Power Delivery explains that power management allows a device to take the power it requires. In practical terms, the number on the outlet is an available ceiling under supported conditions, not a guaranteed rate for every connected device.
Why the same outlet can charge different devices at different rates
Several factors affect the result:
- Device support: the receiving device must accept one of the offered voltage and current profiles.
- Cable capability: the cable must suit the connector, current and charging method being used.
- Battery state: many devices reduce charging power as the battery fills.
- Temperature: a device can reduce its accepted power when thermal limits are reached.
- Active use: the device may consume part of the incoming power while its screen, processor or radios are operating.
This is why a 20W port can show different charging times across two phones, and why a marketing claim such as a fixed percentage faster is not reliable without a named device, cable, starting battery level and test method.
Read USB-A labels separately
A USB-A port labeled 5V/3A describes up to 15W at that voltage by simple multiplication. It does not establish USB-C Power Delivery, a data rate or a specific fast-charging protocol. The connected device and cable still determine what can be used.
When a product includes both USB-A and USB-C, check whether the manufacturer states that output is independent or shared. If no simultaneous-load behavior is documented, do not assume every port can deliver its printed maximum at the same time. Test results for one connected device should not be generalized to a full bank of devices.
Charging specifications do not prove data transfer
Voltage, current and wattage describe power. They do not show whether the port transfers files, supports a keyboard, carries video or connects to a host computer. A furniture outlet that has only a mains power cord and no stated upstream USB connection should be treated as charging-only unless its documentation explicitly says otherwise.

Keep AC ratings separate from USB ratings
The AC receptacles and USB power supply are different parts of a combined furniture outlet. An AC label such as 15A/125V describes the receptacle side and must not be used as the USB charging limit. Likewise, the USB-C 20W figure does not change the AC branch-circuit capacity. Follow the physical product label and connected-device requirements for each side.
Profile-reading checklist
- Calculate watts for each listed profile with volts x amps.
- Use the highest result as an approximate maximum, not a sum.
- Confirm that the device supports one of the published profiles.
- Use a cable suitable for the required charging capability.
- Check whether a multi-port output is independent or shared.
- Do not infer data, video or networking from charging numbers.
- Do not infer a fixed charging-time improvement without a controlled test.
